It was a STEM filled October with two different lessons that are based on the book The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams. In a Makey Makey activity, students in grades K and 1 learned about how circuits work and helped complete the circuits by touching pumpkins to make the sound effects from the story. The lesson incorporated science and language arts standards in fun-filled story retell activity. We shared parts of this Video on how to use a Makey Makey to create a pumpkin piano with students. We as teachers created the code for this activity, but we showed students the code via a projector and how it worked. Then...we made sounds with the pumpkins (Oooh Ahhh!). View my Tweet for a video of the sound effect machine in action. In the Breakout EDU activity, students in grades 1 and 2 solved math problems, puzzles, and more to unlock 6 clues and create a final question to unlock the last Breakout box. The puzzles all were related to the story and led to a digital book QR code surprise. In this game, students has to use their 4 C's and needed to solve problems and have a growth mindset. We used a free game (link below) and changed out some of the puzzles to differentiate for the various grade levels and student learning needs. View my Tweet to see students working on this Breakout game. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Want to take the ideas of circuits further with your classes? Below are links to Makey Makey activities, as well as some Seesaw activities that could be used to make students' thinking and learning about circuits visible. Want to learn more about Breakout EDU? At the iLeap PD day, we discussed a variety of ways to use Seesaw with students and families. One discussion we had was about ways to reach ELLs and their families. I wanted to share some links and videos that could help when getting the year started with Seesaw. First, you will find a Seesaw Introduction video that you can share with your families via email or on your webpage. One version is in English and the other is in Spanish. You can also visit the Seesaw translations link to learn more about providing translated e-mail and paper parent invitations for Seesaw. There are many languages to choose from to help you reach all families.
